Microsoft considering Apple’s Mac App Store for Office 2011

Microsoft is considering offering Office for Mac 2011 in Apple’s Mac App Store.

Speaking to All Things Digital’s Ina Fried, Microsoft’s Amanda Lefebvre confirmed “It’s something we are looking at.” Microsoft currently offers Office for Mac 2011 at retailers and via the web. Microsoft recently made a 30-day trial version of Office for Mac 2011 available. “It’s something we haven’t ruled out,” Lefebvre said. “We just have to see how that relates to our business.”

Microsoft recently revealed that Office for Mac 2011 has exceeded the company’s “internal sales milestones.” Office for Mac 2011 does not include all the components that are available in Office Professional Plus for Windows, but supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Microsoft launched Office for Mac 2011 in October. Office for Mac 2011 also sees the return of Outlook on the Mac, offering similar functionality and appearance, including a Mac inspired theme ribbon, as Outlook 2010 for Windows.

Office for Mac 2011 will also allow for multiple document editing, so users can edit the same document at the same time, without getting a lockout notice. Office for Mac will include document sharing with other Mac and Windows office users, through SharePoint, SkyDrive and web apps.

Microsoft recently revealed that new users of Office for Mac 2011 must enter a 25-character activation key within 15 days of installing the product otherwise the product will refuse to launch. At the end of the grace period, Office for Mac 2011 refuses to launch. The grace period and after efforts of not activating Office for Mac 2011 are much stricter than Office 2010 for Windows. Office 2010 gives users 30 days to activate and provides a grace period of up to 180 days providing you reset the grace period countdown clock.
