Microsoft readying an official Windows Phone 7 microSD list

Microsoft is currently buying up every single microSD card in existence to create an official support list for Windows Phone 7.

The software giant has come under some criticism and anger from Windows Phone 7 owners for the lack of clear microSD support in the past few weeks. Windows Phone 7 does support the use of microSD cards but in a very limited fashion. Users can install microSD cards but the memory is formatted for use on the phone only. If a Windows Phone 7 user removes the microSD card then the phone is reset and the memory card cannot be read in most other devices. Users will also lose any data stored on their device.

Microsoft’s approach to microSD cards on Windows Phone 7 is that manufacturers should be fitting them in devices, not users. The OS pairs the phone with the memory card and treats it as one volume. The card is locked to the OS with an automatically generated password and checksum so that Windows Phone 7 can ensure content hasn’t been modified outside of the OS.

In a recent interview with TechRadar, Microsoft confirmed they are busy buying up every microSD card they can to test them fully and prepare a full list of officially supported cards. The issue is that most SD cards vary in speed, capacity and quality. Some cards could cause devices to slow down during day-to-day operations. Microsoft issued an official support document that details Windows Phone 7 SD card limitations. The official company line is that end users should not swap out or remove SD cards from their phones.

Sounds familiar. The Mac also has this issue. If you format your microSD, or any memory stick for that matter, on a Mac. You will then no longer be able to use it on multiple devices. Like the PlayStation®Portable.

There's apparently a way round it, not sure if it works though.
