During its WWDC keynote address today (via Engadget) Apple announced that the next major update for its Mac OS X operating system, code name Mountain Lion, would be released sometime in July. The price for downloading the update on older Mac PCs will be just $19.99, which is $10 less than the price for the last OS X update, Lion.

Apple said the $19.99 update can be installed on all of your Macs (buy once, install multiple times) back to those running on the Snow Leopard. In addition, anyone who purchases a new Mac starting today will be able to get the Mountain Lion update for free. That includes the newly revealed MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebooks.

Apple went over a number of the new features that uses can expect when Mountain Lion is released and includes support for iCloud and a new feature called Power Nap, which updates your email, notifications and photos while running in the background. It will also have new voice dictation features that will allow users to access a number of applications, including Microsoft Word, using their voice.

Apple also said today that it has sold 26 million copies of the OS X Lion update. In addition, there are now 66 million Mac users worldwide, which Apple says is triple what the number was just five years ago.

How much was the upgrade for Windows 8 slated to cost? I'm starting to see a pattern here. A competitive pattern.

Pretty funny Apple sues everyone for everything, but they're also liberal when it comes to "borrowing" ideas.

I'm currently running Lion. $19.99 is really cheap and I should buy it no matter what. I just need to check out the specs to see if their is a big difference from Lion or will it just be good for using up more of my precious memory.
