Photo editing without Photoshop

Outside of Photoshop which has a high learning curve it seems, what programs do you use for editing? I find myself relying on Picasa for general editing but if I wanted more in-depth where should I head? I am not looking to spend my entire paycheck so I am looking for a program that is free, affordable and user friendly.

Have you tried Gimp? I personally love Photoshop, but a lot of people who want something other than PS, go with Gimp....and it has a lot of the same functionality, so you wouldn't be missing out on anything.

No I haven't tried Gimp, I don't even think I have heard of it before, but believe me I will go check it out. Is it expensive and is there an easy learning curve on it?

You should be able to pick it up fairly easily, too. For more complex stuff, you'll want to check out tutorials probably, but for the basics, you can dive right in.

I was going to recommend Gimp as well. It's a nice, free photoshop alternative.
I personally prefer Photoshop over anything else though.
